BOYZ n the Hood director John Singleton, 51, is in hospital after suffering a stroke.

Columnist B. Scott revealed the news on her blog on Saturday morning, after John was admitted on Friday evening.

She wrote: "According to our sources, the legendary John Singleton is in the hospital after suffering a stroke.

"His condition is unknown at this time, but we’re sending prayers his way.

"We’ll keep you updated with any significant developments."

TMZ added John admitted himself to hospital after his leg became weak.

John's family have now released a statement to Metro.co.uk which read: "On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital.

"John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care.

"We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."

Rapper Snoop Dogg, a friend of John's, sent him well wishes in a post on social media after the news was released.

He wrote alongside a picture of them together: "Pray [for] my brother John Singleton."

John rose to fame with his directorial debut, Boyz n the Hood, in 1991.

The movie starred Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr, Regina King and Angela Bassett and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director at the Academy Awards in 1992.

The nod made John the youngest person ever to be nominated for Best Director, and the first African-American to be nominated in that category.

During his career, John has also wrote and directed Baby Boy, Higher Learning, Poetic Justice and the 2000 version of Shaft which starred Samuel L. Jackson.

The star has been married and divorced twice and has four grown up children.
