She's been doing a lot of work on TV recently, but fresh from scoring an Emmy for her role on The Handmaid's Tale, Elisabeth Moss has nabbed a new film lead. She'll star in women's rights drama Call Jane.
My Week With Marilyn director Simon Curtis is making this one, working from the script by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi. Call Jane is set in the 1960s and chronicles the true story of an underground network of women who provide safe abortions in the era before the landmark legal decision Roe V. Wade made the practice legal. Moss will be the titular Jane, a married woman who falls unexpectedly pregnant and discovers the network.
"This script is commercial and entertaining, but it’s also really relevant to what is going on with the world today," producer Robbie Brenner tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Women’s rights are important and no one should have the right to control a woman’s body. And that such an idea can be challenged today and that we can go back in time on these issues is scary."
The aim is to kick off shooting the drama early next year. Moss will also be seen in The Square (due 16 March next year) and David Lowery's Old Man And The Gun, which has yet to confirm a UK release date.
