The bells! The bells! The... Stringer Bell? While we don't expect any drug deals to go down, Idris Elba is looking to make his next directorial outing, aiming to also star in and produce a new version of classic tragic romance The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.

Victor Hugo's 1831 novel finds Quasimodo's tower-dweller falling for Esmerelda, but facing all manner of challenges as he attempts to woo his intended. Elba's version will be set in the present day.

It'll be far from the first time that Hugo's novel has been turned into a film (this one is for Netflix), and Elba will need to get a move on, lest Disney decide that the story, which it turned into an animated adventure in 1996, should be another of its live-action pics.

Michael Mitnick is on script duty for this one, with Elba promising that his film will be a "sonic and musical experience", as he's producing original music for the film. More church bell! Elba's film directing debut, Yardie, will be out on 24 August.
