If anyone was thinking that Jordan Peele's directorial debut Get Out would be a fluke, those ideas have been firmly debunked by the success of his follow-up. Us debuted in the American box office charts at the top spot, earning an impressive $70.2 million according to studio estimates.

That's more than double Peele's first film's $33 million launch and healthily ahead of even the advance predictions, which put it around $45-$50 million. The movie is being released in stages outside the States, but it's already doing well here in the UK and elsewhere, earning $16.7 million for an $87 million worldwide total so far. And with a low $20 million budget before marketing costs, expect this one to generate a healthy profit for Universal.

There were no newcomers trying their luck against what was shaping up to be – and became – a powerhouse, so the rest of the chart is holdovers. Top among them was naturally Captain Marvel, still drawing in the crowds and earning $35 million. With more than $321 million in the bank in the US, the latest Marvel steamroller has now crossed $910 million worldwide, powering towards the billion dollar mark after three weeks on release.

Wonder Park was third, adding $9 million, while teen illness romance Five Feet Apart slipped to fourth on $8.7 million. Rounding out the top five was How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which took in $6.5 million and has so far made $145.7 million domestically.

Sixth place went to Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral with $4.5 million, while indie drama remake Gloria Bell upped its screen count and jumped into the top 10 at seventh via $1.8 million. No Manches Frida 2 was down a couple of places to eighth and $1.7 million, ahead of The Lego Movie 2 in ninth, taking home $1.1 million. Alita: Battle Angel dropped a place to 10th, making $1 million.
