Given its Balrog-sized price tag and huge levels of expectation, everyone has been wondering what time period and characters the Amazon-backed, Tolkien-based TV series might tackle. Now, according to often reliable LOTR fan site The One Ring, we might just have an answer: Aragorn.

Specifically, the younger days of the character played by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson's original trilogy. In a long twitter thread, the site's authors laid out the possibilities for a series based around the early days of the Ranger, with a wide set of avenues the story could take.

Of course, there has been no official announcement from Amazon (the series is, after all, still at an early development stage), so we have to treat this as still in the realm of rumour and speculation for now. But it certainly rings – pun entirely, unapologetically intended – true for the best of both worlds between feeding into what has gone before (i.e. recognisable characters) while keeping to the series' plan of not rehashing the LOTR story itself. Now we wait to see whether it pans out...
