In 2015 Denis Villeneuve cemented his growing reputation as one of the smartest and most thrilling directors working today with Sicario, a brutal morally-grey thriller tracing the war on drugs and tensions around the US/Mexican border. He might not be back for sequel Soldado, but Gomorrah director Stefano Sollima’s follow-up sees Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin return for an intense new story of terrorism and human trafficking across the border.

Empire has two new images from the film, as seen in the brand new July issue — on sale now{ =nofollow}. First up is Alejandro Gillick (Brolin), Matt Graver (Del Toro), and Steve Forsing (Jeffrey Donovan) closing in with their rifles drawn.

According to Del Toro, Sicario fans can expect to see a slightly different take on his character this time around. “In the first movie we just learn that [Alejandro’s] a quiet guy, a little bit of a robot, bent on vengeance,” he told Empire. “In this one we see another side to him, a human side.”
