It might be a remake of a 1972 blaxploitation classic, but Superfly isn’t looking backwards. This update of the story of Youngblood Priest — a drug dealer planning one last score before going straight — is firmly rooted in 21st century African-American culture, swapping Harlem for Atlanta and Curtis Mayfield’s classic funk sound for a Future-produced soundtrack.

This exclusive new image shows the man himself, played in the 2018 version by actor and R&B singer Trevor Jackson, stepping out in a slick leather trenchcoat.

The film comes from Director X, who’s helmed videos for some of the world’s biggest music stars, including Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Usher and Busta Rhymes. And there’s no shyness here — if Superfly is a hit, more films could be on the cards. “It’s a franchise play,” Jackson told Empire in the latest issue. “If we can pull this off I’d like to continue this character though a succession of movies.”
